The Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church often shortened to Mar Thoma Church, is a Syrian Christian Church based in the Indian state of Kerala. Its members are part of the Saint Thomas Christian community, which originated from the missionary activity of Thomas the Apostle in Malankara (historical name of modern Kerala). The Church in Malankara flourished under various ecclesiastical faith streams from time to time.

The Mar Thoma Church is an autonomous oriental church with Syriac-high church traditions and eclectic characteristics from the era of the Reformation. The Church defines itself as “Apostolic in origin, Universal in nature, Biblical in faith, Evangelical in principle, Ecumenical in outlook, Oriental in worship, Democratic in function, and Episcopal in character”

Our History

In the early 1970’s the first Marthomite immigrants arrived in Maryland and a little over a decade  On Sep 21st 1981 the first Holy Communion was held in Baltimore along with the Orthodox members at the Brown Memorial Presbyterian church on Charles St , Baltimore by the late Rt. Rev Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius Episcopa.Soon after, Rev. Dr. A.P. Athyal became our first Vicar. At the time, worship services were conducted once a month at the home of the members since there was no common facility that they could gather.  In April 1982, Holy Communion service started to be conducted and was held every second Sunday of the month in the chapel located at Hampden Methodist Church in Baltimore City. Finally, on September 23rd, 1995, Ames United Methodist Church located at 9, 11, and 13 Walker Ave in Pikesville was bought and dedicated as the Mar Thoma Church of Baltimore – our very own church facility and has grown to over 85 families .

Basis of Belief

Worship

The MarThoma Church uses the St. James Liturgy in its weekly worship because it helps the worshipper become spiritual and it reminds us of the message of salvation. One major feature is the Nicene Creed, which defines the beliefs of the Christian faith and explains how Christians are able to worship a God that is also 3 beings. It was created in 325 AD in Nicea and it is currently in use by the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, and various Protestant Denominations. When the service starts, the curtain, illustrating the separation of heaven and earth, is moved, exposing the madbaha (altar). It faces the east because when Christ returns, he will come from the east and move to the west. Incense is used to symbolize the presence of God and it was used to represent respect.
